Joël-François Durand: Musica fictiva

On this CD, Joël-François Durand draws on a variation on the medieval concept of musica ficta. Through these works, he explores – using different instrumentation and thus under entirely different conditions – the effects of “outside” notes; in other words, how the tonal inflections generate beats which, rather than creating a microtonal language, explore their musical potential – for example, how they set up interference patterns that produce definite rhythmic pulsations.
