Morton Feldman: For Philip Guston
Morton Feldman (1926–1987) is renowned for his extremely long compositions. The piece For Philip Guston, which is featured on this album, lasts for over four hours. However, this is merely a superficial aspect. In fact, the piece centres on Feldman’s artistic partnerships, namely with John Cage – as reflected in the piece's thematic core – and with the painter Philip Guston. Feldman dedicated the piece to Guston posthumously, despite their friendship having broken down long before. This recording by Sasha Ishov, Steven Schick and Liam Wooding is one of the few opportunities to listen closely to the piece and is a significant contribution to the interpretation of Feldman’s music.
